VHD is a disk image file format that provides storage for a virtual machine. When you create a virtual machine, you have the option of creating a single VHD, as it requires at least one VHD to install one operating system. If you want to provide more storage for a virtual machine, you can add more than one VHD to the virtual machine. Each virtual machine can have a maximum of three VHDs.
Following are the two main types of VHD:
? Fixed-size —Refers to a VHD that automatically takes up the specified amount of physical disk space on the host computer's file system
? Dynamically expanding —Refers to a VHD that allocates space only when it is required
